The Authentication Enablement Platform team builds and operates the core authentication services that power 1Password. We focus on creating a secure, reliable, and scalable authentication platform that other engineering teams can depend on. This includes evolving our systems from a monolithic architecture to distributed services and building the foundations for identity and access across 1Password.
As a Senior Developer on the Authentication Enablement Platform team, you’ll design, build, and operate backend services that are critical to how users authenticate with 1Password.
You’ll lead the implementation of complex projects, including migrating core authentication functionality out of the monolith into standalone services. You’ll work closely with internal teams as a platform provider, helping them integrate with authentication services and adopt new capabilities safely. This is a senior individual contributor role with meaningful ownership. You’ll independently drive work forward, contribute to system design, and make pragmatic decisions that balance security, reliability, and developer experience.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.
What we're looking for:
- Strong backend engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale
- Experience building API-first services with Go or similar languages
- Solid understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture
- Experience designing and maintaining production APIs, including HTTP fundamentals, RESTful design, versioning, and backward compatibility
- Experience participating in on-call rotations and debugging production issues in distributed systems
- Ability to take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them through to delivery
- Experience collaborating with multiple engineering teams and supporting internal platform consumers
- Clear communication skills and sound judgment when making technical trade-offs
- Familiarity with authentication systems and Identity and Access Management (IAM) concepts
Bonus points for:
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerized systems
- Familiarity with Kafka, Debezium, or event-driven architectures
- Experience building authentication, identity, or security-focused systems
- Experience working on platform or infrastructure teams
- Experience working on or contributing to the decomposition of monolithic systems
What you can expect:
- Design, build, and operate authentication services used across 1Password
- Lead implementation of projects that move critical functionality from legacy systems to modern platform services
- Work closely with internal teams to understand requirements and support adoption of authentication platform capabilities
- Participate in on-call rotations and improve system reliability through incident response and prevention
- Contribute to system design and architecture decisions within the team
- Improve observability, monitoring, and operational tooling for authentication services
- Contribute to team practices through code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing
