As the Marketing Core Technology team we work on building the best in class marketing automations and providing data through resilient data engineering processes, in close collaboration with the Marketing Data Science, Tracking and Marketing Data Analytics teams. Together with our main stakeholders, we build tooling that enables the Demand unit of About You to optimise marketing spend and derive business insights that drive the company forward.
Now we are looking for a Backend Engineer (m/f/d) to join our team. As part of the MCT team, you will work with our other developers and product team to translate business and marketing problems into reliable technical solutions.

What you will do
β’ Design, develop, and maintain backend applications and RESTful APIs.
β’ Develop scalable backend services and fullstack applications using but not limited to PHP full stack.
β’ Provide and manage scalable cloud infrastructure on Google Cloud using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.
β’ Design and manage database schemas, and optimize queries for both Relational and Non-Relational Database Management Systems.
β’ Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines to ensure reliable and automated deployments.
β’ Implement containerization for applications using technologies like Docker.
β’ Ensure performance optimization and monitoring through tools like Google Cloud Logging and Monitoring.
β’ Implement robust security measures, including authentication, authorization, and data encryption
β’ Create internal and external documentation for systems and processes.
β’ Conduct code reviews and contribute to clean, well-documented, and efficient codebases.
β’ Address system performance, data integrity, and integration resiliency with internal and external systems.
Who you are
β’ At least 2 to 4 years of proven backend engineering experience, focusing on event-driven architectures, high-scale data orchestration, and ETL processes rather than standard web applications.
β’ Advanced proficiency in modern PHP (8.2+) and modern frameworks such as Laravel (11/12) or Symfony (6/7), with hands-on experience refactoring legacy monoliths.
β’ Strong SQL skills (MySQL or PostgreSQL), including expert-level schema design, complex query optimization, and indexing strategies.
β’ Proven experience building resilient enterprise-grade integrations (handling complex OAuth lifecycles and 429 rate-limiting) and leveraging Redis and advanced caching strategies.
β’ An obsession with code quality, engineering best practices, and maintaining high testing coverage to ensure system reliability, even if strict TDD isn't your primary approach.
β’ Deep proficiency with observability tools (such as Datadog or Cloud Logging) and advanced debugging techniques to troubleshoot complex distributed systems.
β’ Hands-on experience with containerization and local environment automation using Docker, GNU Make, and Bash scripting.
β’ Proficient in modern, AI-augmented development using tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or Gemini to automate repetitive tasks and optimize the development lifecycle.
Nice to have
β’ Experience with Google BigQuery for TB-scale processing, including table partitioning, clustering, and slot management.
β’ Ability to build APM dashboards (Application Performance Monitoring).
β’ Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) to manage cloud computing resources on GCP or AWS.
β’ Domain experience in marketing technology, specifically such as mobile event attribution (Adjust) or Google GA4.
