Develop Health is on a mission to use AI to radically accelerate access to life-saving medications. By automating complex, manual healthcare processes—like benefit verification and prior authorization—we’ve achieved 10x revenue growth over the past year, growing from $0 to >$10M in annual recurring revenue in less than 2 years, and currently help more than 400,000 new patients every month.
We’re partnering with some of the largest pharmacy benefit managers and payers in the nation, revolutionizing how healthcare interactions occur by eliminating human delays and inefficiencies. Our small, elite team of founders and engineers have previously launched and exited successful healthcare startups including Rupa Health and Canvas Medical. We are now scaling rapidly following a major funding round.
About the Role:
We're hiring an Engineering Manager to build and lead a new engineering team while staying deeply hands-on in the code. This is a player-coach role—you'll spend roughly 60% of your time writing code or directing AI agents, and 40% on people and process. Over time the people-management side grows, but this role stays technical—you'll always be in the weeds, whether that's writing code yourself or orchestrating agents to ship faster.
We're an engineering team that ships with AI agents as a core part of our workflow—coding agents, automated testing, LLM-powered tooling. We need someone who can take that further: bringing structured management experience to help the entire engineering org work more effectively with these tools, not just their own team. You'll define how humans and agents collaborate across the org, raise the bar on engineering processes, and help us build the kind of workflows that let a small team punch well above its weight.
You'll report directly to the CTO, build your team from scratch, and own hiring decisions, technical architecture for your domain, and delivery process. This is our first dedicated engineering management hire—as we scale past 20 engineers, this role grows into VP of Engineering.
What You'll Do — Impact In Your First 3–6 Months:
- Build your team from the ground up—define roles, recruit and hire engineers, and establish the team's culture and standards.
- Ship production code alongside your team across our Python backend and React + TypeScript frontend, focused on work that unblocks others.
- Improve AI-augmented engineering workflows across the org—define where agents handle execution, where engineers verify, and how we maintain quality in regulated healthcare.
- Partner with the CTO and product team to translate complex healthcare problems into clear, scoped engineering work.
What You'll Own — Driving Growth Beyond 12 Months:
- Scale your team and its processes to support 100x transaction growth while maintaining quality and velocity.
- Own significant product surfaces end-to-end, driving both technical and product decisions for your domain.
- Develop your engineers—create growth paths, provide technical mentorship, and build a team where strong engineers want to stay.
- Shape engineering culture company-wide: hiring processes, technical standards, developer experience, and how we work with AI.
What You'll Bring On Day 1:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years managing high-performing engineering teams.
- Strong technical skills—you write production code in Python and TypeScript, review complex PRs, and make architecture decisions. This is not a role where you stop coding.
- Experience building and scaling a team: hiring, onboarding, and creating a high-trust, high-output engineering culture.
- Hands-on experience with AI coding tools and genuine excitement about how agents are changing engineering workflows.
- A product-minded, ownership-driven approach—you think in terms of patient outcomes, not just system uptime.
- Availability to work on-site in Menlo Park at least three days per week (Tuesday–Thursday).
What You'll Need To Learn Quickly:
- How our platform automates benefit verification and prior authorization—the healthcare context that shapes every technical decision.
- Our codebase, architecture, and technical debt landscape—where to invest and where to move fast.
- The AI agents and automation tools we use, and how to push them further across the org.
Bonus Points:
- Experience in healthcare or health-tech environments.
- Prior startup or founding-team experience; a bias for shipping over planning.
- Experience managing teams through rapid scaling (e.g., 5 to 15+ engineers).
- Track record of implementing AI-powered developer tooling or agent workflows.
What We Offer:
- Competitive salary + meaningful equity in a company growing 10x year-over-year.
- Health, dental, and vision coverage; flexible PTO.
- High-end workstation & tooling budget.
- The chance to build and lead a team that directly improves access to care for hundreds of thousands of patients.
