ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The Engineering Manager (EM) plays a pivotal role in enabling technical teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and high-quality software. As a manager of engineers, this role blends people leadership, delivery coordination, architectural oversight, and cross-functional alignment. While the EM is not expected to contribute code regularly, technical credibility, decision-making support, and guidance on delivery quality are critical to success. This role is foundational in our management career track and builds directly on experience gained from the Tech Lead role. It focuses on growing teams, sustaining high delivery quality, and creating the conditions for engineers to thrive.
Primary responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Lead a high-performing engineering team through clear goal setting, structured accountability, and continuous support.
- Coordinate delivery across the full SDLC, ensuring that requirements are clear, processes are efficient, and releases are reliable.
- Guide architectural decisions and technical direction at a high level—without owning the code—ensuring decisions align with business needs and long-term sustainability.
- Ensure quality through process leadership, including robust testing strategies, CI/CD pipeline ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Support operational excellence by integrating SRE principles, ensuring effective monitoring, and conducting blameless postmortems.
- Coach and mentor engineers, providing actionable feedback, supporting career growth, and contributing to succession planning.
- Facilitate cross-functional collaboration with Product, Design, Support, Presales, Professional Services, and other departments to ensure alignment and delivery of customer value.
- Engage in customer-facing interactions as needed—supporting escalation management, contributing to technical product discussions, and participating in technical interviews.
- Influence product direction by collaborating with product managers on technically complex areas, validating assumptions, and co-shaping requirements.
- Own the integrity, accuracy, and trustworthiness of engineering metrics, ensuring visibility, actionability, and alignment with business goals.
- Maintain clarity of team direction, ensuring that everyone—internal and external to the team—is consistently aware of the squad's next 4 months of priorities and commitments.
- Relentlessly make work visible, promoting transparency in progress, blockers, decisions, and ownership across all activities.
- Manage performance expectations and contribute to evaluations using clear indicators and feedback loops.
- Lead by learning, actively engaging in continuous development via reading, structured training, and peer feedback.
What it takes to be successful:
Successful Engineering Managers are proactive, people-first leaders who create leverage through others. They support execution while guiding team development, technical quality, operational maturity, and business alignment. They are obsessed with keeping direction clear, metrics trustworthy, and work visible—ensuring their teams operate with shared context, measurable progress, and transparency for all stakeholders. They are exceptional communicators, able to represent their team across multiple levels—internally with Product and Design, and externally with Sales Engineering, Support, Professional Services, and even customers. All managers are expected to model psychological safety, feedback culture, and inclusive communication.
Education and Experience:
- 5+ years in software development, with at least 1 year of experience in a formal or informal technical leadership role
- Demonstrated experience in managing teams, delivery cycles, and stakeholder relationships
- Proficiency in both backend and frontend development using technologies in our stack such as PHP, Typescript, Go, Angular, React, MySQL/PostgreSQL, AWS.
- Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional projects and aligning engineering efforts with product and business objectives.
- Proficiency in Agile, Lean, and CI/CD practices
- Exposure to SRE concepts, testing frameworks, and operational tooling such as Datadog
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of building rapport with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to manage and track project budgets and timelines, ensuring that engineering deliverables meet both quality and cost expectations.
