About the Role
We are looking for a Staff Engineer – Backend (Data Systems) to own and evolve the data backbone that powers messaging at scale inside HighLevel’s Conversations platform. You’ll design, operate, and scale systems that handle billions of documents across MongoDB, Firestore, Redis, and ElasticSearch with reliability and engineering clarity.
Key Responsibilities
- →Redesign and optimize data models, queries, and indexing strategies across MongoDB, Firestore, and ElasticSearch
- →Own ElasticSearch reliability for billions of documents, including ingestion, indexing, shard strategy, and query performance
- →Eliminate bottlenecks and improve replication health for predictable query and index latency
- →Define data flow and integration boundaries between storage, cache, and APIs
- →Build observability into every data path with metrics, traces, and dashboards
- →Enforce testing standards across all backend modules
- →Drive RFCs, ADRs, and design reviews to push clarity and precision
- →Lead by technical example through hands-on coding and system design
- →Mentor engineers through code reviews and feedback
Requirements
- ✓8+ years of backend engineering experience with deep database expertise
- ✓Proven success with ElasticSearch, MongoDB, or Firestore at massive scale
- ✓Strong understanding of indexing, query optimization, caching, and consistency models
- ✓Expert in Node.js (TypeScript) and scalable microservices design
- ✓Cloud experience with GCP (GKE, Pub/Sub, Cloud Tasks)
- ✓Practical knowledge of observability tools like Grafana, Kibana, and OpenTelemetry
- ✓Passion for code quality, testing discipline, and design rigor
- ✓Track record of shaping team culture through RFCs, ADRs, and technical writing
- ✓No tolerance for regressions, unclear ownership, or untested systems
