ABOUT US
At Hiya, we're making calls safe, useful, and human again.
Voice is the most human form of communication, yet it's become one of the least trusted. Spam, scams, and AI manipulation have eroded what was once a simple way to connect. Hiya is changing that.
Each month our AI voice technology analyzes 28+ billion calls, protecting over 550 million users and 800+ businesses worldwide. Partnering with a growing global network including, AT&T, Samsung, British Telecom EE, Rogers, MasOrange,Bell Canada, MasMovil, and Virgin Media O2, we're not just stopping bad actors, we're helping people feel good and confident about picking up the phone again.
This is a pivotal moment for voice. As new threats and technologies accelerate, so does demand for trusted voice communication. Hiya is growing 40%+ year over year, expanding globally, and defining what voice becomes next.
Join us. You won't just work on what voice is today, you'll shape what it becomes tomorrow: smarter, safer, and genuinely worth answering again.
About the Role
Hiya's Partner Distribution team grows the Hiya Network by bringing our call profiling products β Connect, Protect, and Spoof Defence β to mobile operators and OEM device manufacturers worldwide. We onboarded four operators last year, two more joined this month, and the pace is accelerating.
We're looking for a Software Engineer II to join this team and help us scale. You'll be the one of the primary engineers on problems from definition through production, working in a small, collaborative team that ships iteratively and takes operational responsibility for what it builds. Our stack is Scala, Kafka, Kubernetes and AWS; our systems process call signals in real time for millions of calls across a growing global operator network.
This is a role with real ownership and meaningful scope. You'll have the autonomy to make technical decisions and the support of a team that reviews, designs, and ships together.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead the full development cycle for engineering solutions, from translating business problems into technical specs, through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing monitoring in production
- Take shared ownership of stability, observability, resource usage, and costs for the systems your team builds, and communicate clearly about tradeoffs with stakeholders at varied technical levels
- Contribute to technical decisions on technologies, deployment safety, and application monitoring in alignment with team and company guidelines
- Participate in and lead incident response efforts β communication, escalation, investigation, resolution, and post-mortems β with clarity on user impact
- Turn loosely-defined business problems into concrete technical proposals, iterating with stakeholders as requirements sharpen
- Break down solutions into shippable increments, making pragmatic tradeoffs between shipping quickly and maintaining long-term code quality
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- You've improved observability, maintainability, or performance in one or more Partner Distribution systems, and other engineers are able to reason about those systems more easily
- You navigate production incidents confidently, assess severity quickly, and communicate impact clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- You identify patterns across the systems you work on and apply them to adjacent problems, including actively evaluating where AI tooling can improve team workflows
- Partners and customers experience faster resolution times and more reliable integrations because of work you've led or contributed to
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required:
- 2β3 years of professional software engineering experience
- Ability to communicate clearly with people from different backgrounds, including translating technical incidents into user-facing impact
- Ability to work through ambiguous problem spaces: turning a business need into a technical approach when the spec doesn't yet exist
- Experience making pragmatic tradeoffs between shipping speed and long-term code quality
Preferred:
- Enthusiasm for agentic coding practices
- Experience building and operating services on Kubernetes in production environments
- AWS experience (DynamoDB, EKS, IAM, S3, or similar)
- Experience with incident management and on-call responsibilities in production systems
- Familiarity with Scala or another JVM language
- Experience with event-driven architectures and Kafka
- Experience with observability tooling (Datadog, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar)
The person in this role must embody Hiyaβs key values of Serving our customers, Doing rather than observing, Improving ourselves and our business, Owning and holding ourselves accountable for success, and Leading by showing up with a point of view, engaging in open discussion, listening respectfully to others opinions and committing to decisions.
The requirements listed in the job descriptions are guidelines. You donβt have to satisfy every requirement or meet every qualification listed. If your skills are transferable we would still love to hear from you.
