THE ROLE As NewtonX's first Engineering Manager in Colombia, this is a dual mandate: drive high-velocity engineering delivery and act as the talent magnet who establishes Medellín as a core NewtonX engineering hub. You'll own team growth from the ground up — recruiting, onboarding, and developing exceptional local engineering talent — while partnering closely with US-based leadership to keep the Medellín team fully integrated and high-performing. Fluency and confidence in English, both written and verbal, is essential. You'll represent the team in cross-functional planning, leadership discussions, and technical reviews. WHAT YOU'LL OWN Regional Build & Talent Development - Own the Medellín hiring engine — drive sourcing, interviews, and closing with urgency and a high bar for backend and full-stack talent. - Be a talent magnet — build NewtonX's presence in Medellín's tech community through meetups, university relationships, and your network. - Design onboarding that ramps engineers fast and creates the scaffolding (runbooks, norms, rituals) for a self-sustaining team. - Coach and develop engineers through structured 1:1s, consistent feedback, and a culture of ownership and accountability. Team Leadership & Execution - Drive consistent, high-velocity delivery — remove blockers, maintain sprint health, and translate business priorities into well-scoped engineering work. - Track the right metrics and surface risks early; deliver with urgency without sacrificing quality or sustainability. - Uphold engineering standards across code review, testing, documentation, and CI/CD hygiene. Cross-Functional Collaboration - Operate as a full partner to US-based leadership — align with Product, Data, and Engineering on priorities, timelines, and platform direction. - Represent the Medellín team in cross-functional planning, resource discussions, and roadmap prioritization. - Break down silos and build relationships across org boundaries, proactively bridging time zones and communication gaps. Technical Direction - Stay close to the technical work — review designs, weigh in on architectural decisions, and ensure output reflects scalability and maintainability. - Oversee on-call coverage and observability practices (PagerDuty, Sentry); drive reductions in toil. - In collaboration with Technical Leads, help shape platform direction aligned to company objectives. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Required - 6+ years in engineering with at least 2–3 years managing backend, platform, or infrastructure teams. - Deep backend engineering expertise — able to engage substantively with architectural decisions. Experience with Python and React is a plus. - Proven track record as a talent magnet — you've built teams before and take recruiting as seriously as delivery. - Excellent English proficiency — clear, confident communication in writing and in cross-functional meetings with US-based leadership. - High-velocity execution mindset — you move fast, decide with incomplete information, and keep a team in motion. - Strong cross-cultural communication skills; comfortable with ambiguity and influencing without direct authority. - Hands-on familiarity with PagerDuty, Sentry or equivalent, and GitHub for engineering workflows.
