About the Role
The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking a System Engineer to provide support for in-house activities related to IRIS² entrusted tasks in the area of 5G/6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).
Key Responsibilities
- →Develop 5G/6G NTN software protocol stack (both on-board and on-ground) for IRIS², considering different implementations and related trade-offs;
- →Perform end-to-end system validation (both in the lab and in-orbit) of the 5G gNB, ensuring that any deviation is properly addressed;
- →Follow up closely on the interface between spacecraft and ground, including interface with 5G Core network, payload, ground, and external systems;
- →Define and develop 5G/6G test beds for end-to-end validation of NTN protocols with representative hardware;
- →Organize test campaigns using in-orbit experiments to support derisking of 5G development;
- →Follow up on 3GPP standardization activities to ensure alignment with IRIS2 baseline;
- →Support standardizations by contributing with necessary work items/technical papers;
- →Review industrial contract technical milestones, including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), Qualification Reviews (QR), In-Orbit Validation Review (IOVR), and Service Declaration (SD);
- →Provide technical assessment of industrial deliverables and prepare review comments.
Requirements
- ✓Experience in system engineering, particularly in 5G/6G and Non-Terrestrial Networks;
- ✓Knowledge of software protocol stack development and end-to-end system validation;
- ✓Understanding of spacecraft and ground interfaces, including 5G Core network integration;
- ✓Ability to define and develop test beds for end-to-end validation;
- ✓Experience in organizing test campaigns and in-orbit experiments;
- ✓Familiarity with 3GPP standardization activities;
- ✓Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- ✓Excellent communication and documentation skills.
