THE OPPORTUNITY
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Coda AI team. This team is building the native AI capabilities that make Coda the most intelligent collaborative workspace on the market β and this is the role at the center of that bet.
Coda is where teams build living documents that replace scattered spreadsheets, project trackers, and internal tools with a single, flexible surface. The Coda AI team is making that surface intelligent β building a native AI agent that understands user intent, operates across documents and tables, and helps knowledge workers get real work done. Think of it as building the AI brain that turns a powerful doc platform into an AI-native productivity experience.
The team owns three critical workstreams: the native agent chat experience (a general-purpose AI assistant that shows up in-doc, in the workspace home, and across the Go assistant), the MCP tooling that lets external AI clients connect to Coda as a system of record, and the AI integration layer that powers capabilities like intelligent writing, table creation, and task automation. Cutting across all of this is a rigorous approach to AI quality β building evaluation pipelines, golden datasets, and automated evals that ensure the AI experience is reliably excellent, not just demo-impressive. This is the team that ships the AI features users interact with every day β the "wow" moments where the product feels like it's reading your mind.
You'll be joining at a pivotal moment. The team is preparing for the Coda 1.0 launch in May 2026 and building the foundation for how AI works across the entire product going forward.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Lead and grow a team of 6-7 engineers, providing mentorship, career development, and building a culture of technical excellence and rapid iteration.
- Own the technical direction for the native AI agent β from the agent loop architecture and tool framework through prompt engineering, context management, and multi-turn conversation design. Bring strong instincts about how to measure whether the agent is actually good β building eval pipelines, defining golden datasets, and using data (not vibes) to drive improvement.
- Drive the development of the MCP api that connects Coda to external AI clients (Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT), including tool design, authentication, rate limiting, and enterprise security posture.
- Shape how AI shows up across the product β in-doc chat, workspace home, formula assistance, writing help, and table creation β ensuring a cohesive, delightful user experience that doesn't feel bolted on.
- Collaborate closely with PM, design, and the broader Coda engineering organization to sequence AI capabilities against launch milestones and user needs.
- Make pragmatic architecture decisions at the intersection of the Coda backend, the Go agent platform, and LLM providers β deciding when to build natively vs. integrate, when to use client-side vs. server-side tool execution, and how to unify agent surfaces over time.
- Be deeply involved technically β participating in architecture reviews, contributing to system design, reviewing code, and occasionally sending PRs. This is not a pure people-management role.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering management experience leading teams of 5+ engineers, with a track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong talent.
- Deep hands-on technical background with strong AI literacy β you understand how LLMs work, can evaluate agent architectures, and reason about prompt engineering tradeoffs. You don't need to be an ML researcher, but you need to be able to go deep with your engineers on agent design decisions. Critically, you have strong instincts about AI quality measurement β you know how to build eval frameworks, design golden datasets, and create feedback loops that systematically improve AI output rather than relying on spot-checking.
- Experience building and shipping user-facing AI or AI-adjacent products β chat interfaces, copilots, assistants, recommendation systems, or intelligent features that real users interact with. Ideally you've seen what it takes to get AI from "cool demo" to "reliable product."
- Strong product engineering instincts β you care about user experience, you understand that the best AI features are the ones that feel invisible, and you can balance polish with speed.
- Experience operating in fast-moving, high-ambiguity environments where the product direction evolves quickly and you need to make tradeoffs between foundational investment and shipping.
- Familiarity with modern AI infrastructure: LLM APIs, agent frameworks, tool-use patterns, evaluation pipelines, prompt management. Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a plus.
- Communicates clearly and influences effectively across engineering, product, design, and leadership.
