THE OPPORTUNITY
Superhuman is on a mission to build the fastest, most delightful productivity experiences powered by AI. As we scale rapidly, our internal technology operations must evolve to match our ambition. We're looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Data Enablement team.
Superhuman’s success depends on its ability to efficiently ingest over 70 billion daily events while using our systems to improve our products. This role presents a unique opportunity to experience all aspects of building complex software systems, including contributing to the strategy, defining the architecture, and developing and shipping to production.
Superhuman's engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence the roadmap of our product suite. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure.
OVERVIEW
We are hiring a Manager for our Data Enablement team to own first-party data ingestion services and data governance - the foundational layer that makes everything downstream possible. This person will lead a team of ~6-8 engineers responsible for the systems that collect, validate, and land Superhuman’s 70B+ daily events into our Databricks Lakehouse, and for the governance frameworks that keep that data discoverable, secure, and compliant.
This role reports to the Director of Data Enablement and sits at the center of the broader data organization - with direct influence over platform architecture decisions, tooling strategy, and cross-team standards for data quality and access. The scope will grow over time, but the initial charter is to harden and scale our ingestion pipeline, and build governance into a first-class capability.
As the Engineering Manager, you will:
- Own first-party ingestion end-to-end - lead the team that designs, operates, and scales the services responsible for collecting and landing event data from Superhuman products into the lakehouse, targeting high availability and low-latency delivery.
- Build data governance as a product - develop and ship self-serve frameworks for data discovery, access management, quality monitoring, and policy enforcement so that engineers, analysts, and ML practitioners can find and trust the data they need without filing tickets.
- Grow and lead the team - hire, mentor, and retain a high-performing group of engineers. Set clear expectations, run effective rituals, and create an environment where senior ICs have the autonomy to do their best work.
- Partner across the data org - collaborate closely with Analytics Engineering, Data Engineering, ML Platform, and Data Science teams to ensure ingestion and governance decisions account for batch, real-time, and ML training workloads. Represent the team’s roadmap and tradeoffs in cross-functional planning.
- Drive platform health and cost efficiency - monitor pipeline reliability, data freshness SLAs, and infrastructure spend. Identify optimization opportunities and make data-informed tradeoff decisions between reliability, latency, and cost.
- Evaluate and adopt tooling deliberately - assess new technologies against real requirements rather than hype. Drive build-vs-buy decisions for ingestion and governance tooling with clear success criteria.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering, infrastructure & governance, with at least 2-3 years in a managerial role.
- Experience with data lakehouse providers, such as Snowflake, Databricks, or BigQuery.
- Experience with cloud platforms - AWS, GCP, or Azure
- Familiarity with modern data engineering and orchestration tools and frameworks (e.g., Apache Kafka, Airflow, DBT, Spark).
- Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a track record of mentoring and developing high-performing teams.
- Experience working with geographically distributed teams
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate and resolve complex technical challenges.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders across different locations and time zones.
- Proven ability to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where things change quickly.
- Leads by setting well-understood goals and sharing the appropriate level of context for maximum autonomy, but is also profoundly technical and can dive in to help when necessary.
- Willingness to meet in person for scheduled team collaboration weeks and travel, if necessary, to other Superhuman hubs.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Superhuman offers all team members competitive pay along with a benefits package encompassing the following and more:
- Excellent health care (including a wide range of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and fertility benefits)
- Disability and life insurance options
