Toast is looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join the AI team. The ideal candidate has a solid track record in the product-oriented development and deployment of machine learning models. As an Machine Learning Engineer II, you will work with a team of machine learning engineers, data scientists, partner engineering team and product managers to build machine learning pipelines and deploy models for product lines.
About this Roll*:
β’ Collaborate with machine learning engineers and data scientists to design and build scalable ML and agentic AI pipelines, develop APIs, and implement microservices with a strong focus on latency, reliability, and performance
β’ Drive engineering excellence by enforcing best practices in version control, code reviews, testing, and documentation, contributing to a high-quality and maintainable codebase
β’ Stay up to date with emerging tools, technologies, and best practices across ML engineering and cloud infrastructure, and actively contribute to continuous improvement within the team
β’ Monitor, debug, and optimize model performance and production infrastructure, ensuring robustness, scalability, and efficiency
β’ Contribute effectively in an agile development environment, embracing iterative delivery, ownership, and continuous learning
β’ Partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders (product managers, engineers, and data teams) to deliver reliable, high-impact ML-powered products

Basic Qualifications
β’ Bachelorβs degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience)
β’ 2β5 years of industry experience building and deploying machine learning systems in production environments
Technical Skills
β’ Strong programming skills in Python, Java/Kotlin, PySpark.
β’ Hands-on experience with ML frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch
β’ Experience designing and deploying microservices-based architectures, preferably on AWS (e.g., SageMaker, DynamoDB, Athena, Glue, Iceberg)
ML Engineering & Systems
β’ Hand on experience with MLOps best practices: CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), testing (TDD), experiment tracking (MLflow), and workflow orchestration
β’ Experience with model deployment, orchestration (e.g., Apache Airflow), and scalable infrastructure, including efficient CPU/GPU utilization
β’ Solid understanding of end-to-end ML lifecycle: data ingestion, feature engineering, model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring
Software Engineering & Collaboration
β’ Strong foundation in software engineering principles, including object-oriented design, modularity, and maintainability
β’ Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts effectively
