About Woven by Toyota
Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota’s once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation — expanding what “mobility” means and how it serves society.
Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we’re working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.

TEAM
Toyota is redefining what it means to move. We're challenging the current state of mobility by enhancing the movement of people, goods, information and energy. Centered around three core concepts - A Living Laboratory™, Human-Centered, and Ever Evolving City™ - Woven City serves as a test course for mobility to fulfill our purpose of well-being for all.
We do this by bringing together a diverse community of people with a shared passion for the future of mobility to co-create, develop and refine innovative products and services. This cross-section of social infrastructure, mobility, and people provides a unique opportunity for inventors, residents and visitors to interact seamlessly with new technologies throughout daily life in an environment that emulates a real city.
Our mission is to identify the customer needs through careful validation and create new products and services to help transform Toyota into a Mobility Company.
In a dynamic and uncertain environment, members are expected to take initiative, adapt proactively, and drive their work autonomously to deliver impact. If you're detail-oriented, but thrive in an environment where you need to be scrappy, this team might be right for you.
While our team is diverse in nationality, language, and gender, we also value and respect the culture of Toyota.
We follow a hybrid workstyle, combining office and remote work. Additionally, depending on future circumstances, day trips or work assignments in Woven City (Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture) may be required.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
This is an exciting opportunity to be one of the founding engineers on a new mobility product focused on safety and zero traffic accidents. The concept has been validated through PoC, and now we're building for real-world deployment, leveraging Woven City as our test course.
You will design and build the entire technical stack—from cloud infrastructure and real-time data pipelines to media processing systems and the consumer-facing mobile app—iterating and adapting as we learn from real users. You'll architect how real-time sensor data flows from connected edge devices to end users within minutes, all built on Privacy by Design.
We're looking for someone who balances system design with shipping velocity, prioritizes the value users experience, and learns continuously through validation in real-world environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Build and operate the cloud infrastructure (AWS), integrating third-party vendor SDKs and APIs, and owning the cloud-side reception layer for reliability, data integrity, and scale
• Design the end-to-end data architecture and make key decisions across the stack — event-driven vs. polling, streaming vs. batch, and storage strategy for time-series and media data
• Design and implement the APIs that the rest of the engineering team and mobile app will build against
• Contribute to development of the consumer-facing iOS/Android app, defining client-side architecture and overseeing implementation of core features
• Apply and improve standards for observability, alerting, and KPI tracking from day one, and lead system hardening for the real-world pilot
• Support cross-functional β readiness and own the NFR backlog, ensuring launch criteria are met across cybersecurity, privacy (PIA), and operational observability
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• 4+ years of experience in full stack software development
• Ability to design distributed systems or data pipelines, with clear reasoning on tradeoffs between consistency, availability, and cost — including real-time and near-real-time data systems
• Hands on cloud infrastructure experience with AWS, including architecture decisions, not just deployment
• Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Python,TypeScript, or Go, with solid understanding of SQL, NoSQL, and async communication protocols
• Experience integrating third-party SDKs or APIs, with solid understanding of IoT constraints such as connectivity loss, data ordering, and device limitations, and how they affect cloud-side architecture
• Experience designing and implementing REST/GraphQL APIs
• Experience with DevOps tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and Docker
• Business Level Japanese
NICE TO HAVES
• Experience taking a product from zero to launch — owning architectural decisions end-to-end, ideally in a startup or small founding team
• Background in domains such as IoT, geospatial systems, computer vision, smart mobility, or automotive technologies
• Mobile app development experience with React Native or Flutter
• Experience with video or media ingestion, transcoding, or delivery pipelines
• Privacy By Design awareness, and experience developing products that combine both hardware and software
