We are seeking motivated, detail-oriented Linguists to join the Centre of Indian Language Data (COIL-D) project at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
The COIL-D project serves as a comprehensive repository of language resources designed to promote the creation of data for Human Language Technology (HLT) applications, especially for Machine Translation. In addition, our initiative focuses on creating leaderboards for Machine Translation and establishing benchmark setups for various linguistic tools. The project is currently in its final phase and is scheduled to conclude by 31 March 2027. This is an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a high-impact multilingual language technology initiative at a crucial stage of its development.
β Position: Junior Research Assistant (Language) (3 positions for Gujarati, Marathi, and Kashmiri, respectively)

π΅ Salary: βΉ45,000/- month
π§ Job Description:
- Translation & Review: Perform accurate, context-aware translations from Hindi to the target language (TL). Review and evaluate translations completed by freelancers.
- Freelancer Management: Oversee workflows, track daily targets, and ensure high-quality outputΒ of freelance translators
- Linguistic Tagging & Annotation: Work on linguistic annotations for corpora from different domains.
- Annotation Guidelines and Guidelines Creation: Develop, document and refine the PoS and NER tagging guidelines to ensure consistency and linguistic accuracy, and standardise data processing.
- HLT & Benchmarking Support: Contribute to building resources that support Machine Translation leaderboards and benchmark setups for various linguistic tools.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate closely with the technical team and other project consortia to integrate language resources into HLT applications.
- Status Reporting: Monitor project milestones and prepare regular status reports on progress, challenges, and output metrics for the project lead.
π Essential Qualifications and SkillsΒ
- Education: M.A. in Linguistics, Translation Studies, Language Technology, or M.A. in Gujarati, Marathi, or Kashmiri.
- Linguistic Expertise: Solid academic or practical knowledge of Linguistics, Translation Studies, or HLT annotation principles is compulsory.
Bilingual Proficiency: Native-level command in the TL and excellent proficiency in Hindi.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to spot grammatical nuances, cultural idioms, and structural variations.
- Preferred Skills: Exposure to HLT workflows or data curation pipelines. Experience with annotation tools in academic or industrial settings.
