About the Role
We are looking for a Performance Engineer to join our Video Group at Canva, where you'll help redefine how millions of people tell stories through creative design. This role focuses on optimizing video creation performance across multiple platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- βLead end-to-end performance strategy across the video creation lifecycle
- βProfile and optimize critical paths in our C++ native engine, GLSL/HLSL shaders, and ML-powered effect pipelines
- βDesign and build observability systems including internal profiling tools and automated regression suites
- βDefine and own performance metrics that directly reflect user-perceived fluidity and creative flow
- βCollaborate across teams with Video Engine and AI engineers to evolve system architecture
- βLeverage hardware acceleration using platform-specific APIs (Metal, Vulkan, WebGPU)
Requirements
- βYou treat performance as a product feature and have optimized complex, multi-threaded systems
- βYou think in systems and understand how frontend, backend, and native engines interact
- βStrong proficiency in C++
- βExperience with modern systems languages (e.g., Rust) is a plus
- βStrong understanding of CPU/GPU architectures, memory hierarchies, and SIMD
- βExperience working with graphics APIs such as OpenGL, Metal, or Vulkan
- βYouβre fluent in profiling and diagnostics using tools such as Perf, Instruments, Chrome DevTools
- βYou understand multimedia fundamentals including video codecs and container formats
- βYou use data to validate impact by analyzing telemetry at scale
- βYou elevate those around you by influencing peers and partner teams to prioritize performance
