Role Summary:
Set the overall quality direction for the quality engineering group, directly leading a team of end-to-end integration and performance testers. Own tooling and test standards, lead the cross-cutting testing guild across UI and API testing, and ensure quality is embedded in delivery across all squads. Champion the adoption of AI-powered tools and practices to accelerate testing, improve defect detection, and drive productivity across the quality engineering function.
Purpose:
Own the quality engineering capability for the group, ensuring teams deliver reliable, performant software through effective testing strategies, tooling, and standards. This role contributes to the organisation's mission by setting the quality bar across squads, building and leading a dedicated end-to-end integration and performance testing team, and driving a culture of quality ownership through the testing guild. The QA Manager balances people leadership and strategic quality direction with hands-on involvement in test approach, tooling decisions, and mentoring. A core expectation of this role is championing AI-assisted quality engineering β driving adoption of AI tools for test generation, defect analysis, and performance testing to maximise team productivity and testing effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities:
Quality Direction & Standards
- Set the overall quality strategy and testing standards for the engineering group, ensuring consistency and effectiveness across UI and API testing.
- Define and own the end-to-end integration testing approach, ensuring services and front-end applications are validated together in realistic scenarios.
- Own the performance and load testing strategy, ensuring systems are validated against non-functional requirements before release.
- Define and maintain quality gates, release readiness criteria, and risk-based testing approaches across the group.
- Select, standardise, and govern testing tooling across the group, evaluating tools for UI testing, API testing, integration testing, and performance/load testing β including AI-powered testing tools.
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted quality engineering practices across teams, leveraging tools such as GitHub Copilot and Claude for test generation, defect analysis, test data creation, and exploratory testing acceleration.
- Ensure quality practices are embedded in CI/CD pipelines and delivery workflows.
- Track and report on quality metrics across the group, using data to drive improvement and demonstrate quality ROI.
People Leadership & Team Management
- Line-manage the end-to-end integration and performance test team, conducting regular one-to-ones, setting objectives, and providing continuous feedback.
- Build and develop the team's capability across integration testing, performance testing, API testing, and UI testing.
- Own hiring, onboarding, and performance management for the test team.
- Create a high-performing, inclusive, and psychologically safe team environment.
- Accountable for team efficiency, sustainable workload, and wellbeing.
Testing Guild Leadership
- Lead the testing guild as a cross-cutting community of practice spanning all squads.
- Use the guild to drive consistency in testing approaches, share knowledge, and raise the quality bar across UI and API testing.
- Facilitate regular guild sessions covering test strategy, tooling, patterns, and lessons learned.
- Ensure the guild connects embedded squad testers with the central integration and performance team, creating a cohesive quality community.
Mentoring & Coaching
- Mentor and coach testers across the group β both within the direct team and embedded squad testers β developing their skills in test design, automation, and quality thinking.
- Partner with Lead QA Engineers on developing senior QA talent.
- Build a culture of continuous learning and quality craftsmanship within the testing community.
- Use code and test reviews as coaching opportunities.
Collaboration & Delivery Partnership
- Partner with Software Engineer Leads and Engineering Managers to ensure quality is considered in delivery planning and technical decisions.
- Coordinate with Product Management to understand release priorities and ensure appropriate test coverage for high-risk areas.
- Work with platform and DevOps teams to maintain and improve test environments, test data management, and CI/CD integration.
- Ensure quality risks are visible to stakeholders and inform release decisions.
Skills & Competencies:
Required
- Strong understanding of the quality engineering domain and delivery context, with the ability to partner with quality leads on direction.
- Experience leading and managing a QA or test team, including hiring, performance management, and development.
- Expert knowledge of end-to-end integration testing across multi-service architectures.
- Strong experience with performance and load testing tools, approaches, and analysis (e.g. k6, JMeter, Gatling, or equivalent).
- Deep knowledge of both UI testing (e.g. Playwright, Cypress, Selenium) and API testing (e.g. Postman, REST Assured, or equivalent) approaches.
- Experience defining and governing testing tooling and standards across multiple teams.
- Ability to set quality metrics, track trends, and use data to drive improvement.
- Exceptional communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders, skilled at quality status and risk communication.
- Experience leading a community of practice or guild model.
- Strong coaching and mentoring skills with a track record of developing testers.
- Experience driving adoption of AI-powered tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude, AI-assisted test generation) to accelerate quality engineering practices, including test creation, defect analysis, and performance testing.
Desirable
- Experience with testing in event-driven and microservices architectures.
- Familiarity with contract testing approaches (e.g. Pact).
- Experience with test environment management and test data strategies.
- Understanding of AKS/Kubernetes and containerised deployment models.
- Experience with C#/.NET and Angular technology stacks.
- Background in both hands-on test engineering and people leadership.
