About the Role
We are looking for a Design Systems Engineer to join our cross-functional Design Systems team at Discord. This role focuses on developing and maintaining the core design primitives and standards that engineers and designers use to build Discord’s products, ensuring design quality across all facets of UI, content, and graphics.
Key Responsibilities
- →Lead the team’s technical direction and architecture of the engineering foundations that underpin our frontend primitives.
- →Work closely with engineers and designers to build and maintain our design system, Mana, and improve it over time.
- →Author beautiful, accessible components that work across all supported platforms (iOS, Android, desktop, and web).
- →Build internal tools like Figma plugins, asset pipelines, codemods, and lint rules to empower engineers and designers.
- →Provide guidance to teams on the best way to use design systems components and tools across their projects.
- →Create interactive prototypes to communicate your work and use user research & data to inform your reasoning.
- →Inspire the team and internal partners by bringing new ideas and implementing them as next-generation product primitives.
- →Mentor engineers and set high standards through code and RFC review, championing UI/UX quality at Discord.
Requirements
- ✓8+ years of work experience as a software engineer building, shipping, and iterating on product features or internal tools.
- ✓4+ years experience working on a design system.
- ✓Expertise with web (React, TypeScript) and mobile (React Native, Swift, Objective-C, Kotlin) client-focused development.
- ✓A deep understanding of accessibility and performance, and their application in creating robust user interfaces.
- ✓Strong, clear written communication skills and a healthy appreciation for good documentation.
- ✓Strong UI/UX sensibility and passion for great design and user experience.
- ✓Experience working on cross-functional teams with designers or product managers.
- ✓Willingness and excitement to learn new technical skills and expand your toolkit.
- ✓A consistent track record of delivering multi-milestone projects on time and at a high level.
- ✓Experience safely migrating existing front-end codebases to new technical patterns at scale.
