ABOUT THE ROLE:
Gen Digital is building a Financial Wellness platform that powers Norton Money, Norton 360 and LifeLock, spanning bank-linking, transactions and insights, credit, identity protection and a digital marketplace for financial products.
Weβre looking for a Lead Backend Software Engineer to lead the backend architecture for the Gen Financial Wellness platform.
Youβll own critical services end-to-end, set technical direction, and work across teams to deliver secure, reliable and compliant financial experiences at scale.
In this role, you will:
- Own and evolve backend services for Financial Wellness (Norton Money, Norton 360, Norton Genie and LifeLock) from design and implementation to operations and observability (Java/Spring Boot on AWS, Postgres, Kafka).
- Design and review REST APIs and data contracts between internal and external services, providers, keeping them secure, versioned and easy to integrate.
- Champion event-driven architectures and telemetry pipelines for offers, leads, financial events and alerts, using Kafka and well-governed schemas.
- Drive reliability and performance: SLOs, capacity planning, multi-AZ resilience, performance and endurance testing, and incident response for your services.
- Partner with Security, Privacy and Legal to ensure backend designs meet PII, credit-reporting and regulatory requirements across Gen product portfolio.
- Mentor engineers, lead design reviews and help shape the long-term technical roadmap for Financial Wellness backends at Gen.
About you:
MUST-HAVES
- Strong experience building backend services in Java (Spring Boot or similar) and operating them in production at scale.
- Hands-on expertise with cloud-native architectures on AWS (ECS/EKS or Fargate, RDS/Aurora, VPC, load balancers, WAF, S3, Secrets Manager).
- Solid knowledge of relational databases (Postgres or equivalent) and at least one NoSQL store (e.g., DynamoDB, DocumentDB), including schema design and migrations.
- Experience with event streaming/messaging (Kafka or similar) and event-driven system design.
- A track record of owning architecture for a product/domain, influencing cross-team decisions and working directly with senior stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of secure software design (authN/authZ, least privilege, PII handling, auditing) and comfort working with security/compliance reviews.
NICE-TO-HAVES
- Background in financial services, financial wellness, embedded finance, banking or credit products, or identity-/privacy-focused platforms.
- Experience with serverless (API Gateway, Lambda, Step Functions, DynamoDB, Redis) and/or integrating with AI platforms (e.g., Bedrock, Strands agents, AgentCore, tool-calling) in data-heavy products.
- Familiarity with observability stacks such as Datadog, Dynatrace or Sumo Logic, and defining SLOs and alerts.
OUR STACK (SHORT VERSION)
You donβt need prior experience with every technology, but you should be comfortable leading in an environment that includes:
- Languages & frameworks: Java (Spring Boot), some Node.js and Kotlin; Python for selected serverless/AI workloads.
- Data & messaging: PostgreSQL (RDS/Aurora), DynamoDB/DocumentDB, Redis/ElastiCache, Kafka/MSK, BigQuery/Burger for analytics.
- Infra & observability: AWS, ECS Fargate, API Gateway, WAF, Terraform, CloudWatch, Datadog, Dynatrace and Sumo.
WHATβS NEXT:
The interview process consists of two stages and combines both technical and managerial interviews.
You can expect a series of conversations where youβll have the opportunity to demonstrate your technical expertise, discuss your experience, and meet key stakeholders to learn more about the role and the team.
