About the Role
We are looking for a PhD Intern to join our Online Analytics Engines team at LinkedIn. This role involves working at the intersection of distributed systems and database internals, focusing on building and operating OLAP Database Engines for low-latency analytics.
Key Responsibilities
- →Build a high performance engine in native code (C++, Rust)
- →Leverage modern HW acceleration capabilities like LLVM based JIT
- →Innovate on system performance optimizations across CPU, memory, and IO
- →Re-imagine IO layer based on memory mapping files on SSDs
- →Develop thread per core based query architecture for improving tail latencies
- →Work with indexes based on Radix Tree, BW Tree, and Hash Indexes
- →Expand complex SQL support including JOINs and Window Functions
- →Add query planning support with cost based and rule based optimizers
- →Implement Upsert capabilities in real-time
- →Develop Tiered Storage solutions
- →Index and store nested/unstructured/semi-structured event data
- →Create agentic AI based capabilities to improve operations
Requirements
- ✓Currently enrolled in a PhD program
- ✓Expected graduation date December 2026 or later
- ✓Strong background in distributed systems and database internals
- ✓Experience with C++ or Rust preferred
- ✓Knowledge of LLVM and JIT compilation
- ✓Understanding of SQL and query optimization
- ✓Familiarity with performance tuning across multiple resource dimensions
- ✓Ability to tackle complex engineering problems at LinkedIn scale
