BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST β M-KOPA (AFRICA)
[[Upgrade to PRO to see link]]
You're the person in the room who sees the question behind the question. Someone presents a business problem and while everyone else is debating the answer, you're already thinking about the data β where it lives, how clean it is, what query will surface what actually matters. You've learned to move between technical rigour and business fluency, and you've discovered that the most valuable thing you can do isn't build the most sophisticated model β it's make sure the right people understand what the data is telling them.
You're good at this. The question is whether your current environment is big enough for it.
At M-KOPA, data isn't a support function. It's how a business serving 7 million customers across Africa β and growing toward 10 million β makes decisions that matter. We've unlocked over $2 billion in credit for people across the continent, 55% of whom are accessing formal financial services for the very first time. 86% report a meaningful improvement in their quality of life. Every one of those outcomes is shaped, in part, by the quality of the analysis that sits behind our commercial, operational, and strategic decisions. That's the environment a Business Intelligence Analyst joins here.

Why this moment matters
M-KOPA is growing fast and growing deliberately. Moving from 5 million to 7 million customers in a year, and now building toward 10 million, requires a data capability that can keep pace β one that doesn't just report on what happened, but surfaces what's coming, what's not working, and where the next opportunity is before someone else sees it.
This role sits at the intersection of technical capability and business impact. You won't be working in a corner of the analytics function that feeds dashboards nobody reads. You'll be engaging directly with business stakeholders across functions and geographies, translating their questions into analysis, and translating that analysis back into decisions. At M-KOPA's scale, that feedback loop has real consequences.

What this role actually looks like
You'll proactively identify opportunities where analysis can drive valuable business results β which means you won't be waiting for tickets to arrive. You'll engage key business stakeholders to understand their analytic and reporting needs, design the right approach, and deliver findings in formats that drive action rather than just inform.
Day to day, you'll query data from internal and external databases using SQL and U-SQL, clean and interpret datasets, and apply statistical techniques to turn raw data into structured insight. You'll build models, analyses, and data transformations using Excel, SQL, and R β and you'll test and QA your own code with the rigour that comes from knowing your output will influence real decisions.
The communication side is just as important as the technical side. You'll design presentations of analytic findings that are clear, user-friendly, and built for the audience β whether that's a finance lead, a country manager, or a commercial team asking a complicated question about customer behaviour. You'll also train stakeholders across the business to improve data fluency, which means you'll be building capability, not just delivering conclusions.
Operationally, you'll support the improvement and streamlining of technical and business processes β finding ways to make the data function more efficient, more reliable, and more useful to the people who depend on it.

What makes you ready for this
- Proven track record in data analytics roles, with demonstrable experience conducting analysis in Excel and querying databases using SQL β combined with the ability to clean, interpret, and structure data to answer complex business questions with accuracy and clarity.
- Strong communication skills across functions and geographies, with demonstrated ability to translate analytical findings into clear, actionable business recommendations β and to work collaboratively with non-technical stakeholders to ensure analysis drives decisions, not just reports.
- Additional capability in R, Python, DAX, Power BI, or Tableau would strengthen your candidacy considerably β as would a background in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Mining, Computer Science, Economics, or a related discipline.
The reality check
This is a role with real breadth. You'll be managing multiple assignments and problem types simultaneously, across different business functions, often with competing deadlines. The expectation is high-quality output, consistently β not perfection when conditions are ideal. If you're someone who thrives when the problems are varied, the stakeholders are engaged, and the analysis actually gets used β you'll find this environment energising. If you need a narrow, well-defined remit to do your best work, this is probably not the right fit.
Why M-KOPA, not somewhere else
Most BI roles put you close to data. This one puts you close to decisions that affect the financial lives of millions of people across Africa. The analysis you produce here doesn't sit in a reporting layer β it informs commercial strategy, operational priorities, and growth decisions for a business at a genuinely critical moment in its trajectory.
We're also a business that takes data fluency seriously across the organisation. The stakeholders you'll work with are engaged, the questions are substantive, and the feedback loop between analysis and action is short. That's a different kind of environment to one where good work disappears into a reporting system that nobody interrogates.
If you've been looking for a role where your technical skills, your business instinct, and your ability to communicate findings clearly all matter in equal measure β this is worth exploring.
