Come join us! The Job As a Senior Software Engineer on our Data Management team, you will own the APIs and services that ingest, validate, and transform the IoT data powering our business. We are looking for a strong backend engineer with deep roots in object-oriented design who is ready to apply those skills to modern data challenges. You’ll collaborate with a hybrid team of data engineers, software engineers, and data scientists to ensure our data remains a strategic asset, while exploring AI-driven enhancements and leveraging large-scale distributed processing and streaming technologies. Here is an outline of some of the things you’ll be doing: Core Engineering, Data Ingestion & API Systems • Design and maintain robust backend services using object-oriented principles to manage asset configurations, onboarding workflows, and time-series metadata • Build and optimize internal APIs that securely and efficiently serve data to other internal teams and stakeholders • Own and maintain existing API-based ingestion services while collaborating on the evolution of our data platform toward distributed processing and streaming models • Work alongside Data Science and Data Engineering to integrate AI-driven insights and automated logic into our core services to improve data accuracy and operational efficiency User & Business Understanding • Partner with business stakeholders to translate solar energy concepts (like inverter telemetry and battery states) into clean, scalable models • Act as a consultant for internal data consumers to ensure our APIs and metadata services meet the evolving needs of the organization • Use data and stakeholder feedback to prioritize service reliability and scalability where it impacts the business most Grow With The Team • Learn and contribute to our large-scale distributed processing stack, moving beyond traditional backend services and build knowledge with Spark, Python and Lakehouse architectures • Explore and champion the use of AI-driven tools and workflows to automate data validation and enhance our predictive capabilities • Help drive the adoption of Databricks and other cloud-native data platforms as we scale our streaming and ETL capabilities • Share your expertise in object-oriented design with the broader data team while learning modern data engineering patterns in return Technical Excellence & Mentorship • Define and drive engineering best practices, ensuring code is testable, maintainable, and highly observable • Balance the delivery of new features with the long-term health of our services, proactively identifying and addressing technical debt • Mentor peers on the nuances of backend architecture, while actively seeking to learn from the team’s expertise in data engineering and AI applications Who You Are • You are genuinely interested in how software can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy • You can navigate complex codebases, dive into metrics and logs, and self-serve the answers needed to troubleshoot or innovate • You thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment where you might be building a traditional API one day and exploring an AI-driven data validation tool the next • You are able to new learn new concepts, tools, and technologies quickly • You care about the people your software impacts, have a strong interest in aligning work and requirements with business outcomes • You demonstrate respect and dignity for all people • You are curious and have a growth-oriented mindset • You are able to give and receive constructive feedback Experience You’ll Need • 4+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering • Deep proficiency in Kotlin or Java (or another modern OO language) with a strong grasp of design patterns and clean code principles • Extensive experience building and maintaining APIs & services, specifically those involving complex business logic, high traffic, tight SLAs, or metadata management • Professional experience working within cloud environments (AWS preferred) • Ownership mindset with a firm understanding of monitoring, testing, and CI/CD pipelines • Experience using AI tools to augment and accelerate feature development Experience Thats a Plus • 2+ years building, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines • Full-stack development • Distributed or asynchronous systems • Multithreaded or parallel programming • Experience with (or a desire to learn) Python and distributed processing frameworks like Spark • Exposure to Databricks, Snowflake, or similar large-scale data environments. • Familiarity with integrating AI/ML models into production services • Experience in solar or distributed energy technology • High-growth startup or fast-paced tech environment experience • Experience with asynchronous and parallel processing frameworks such as Kotlin coroutines Logistics • Our office is in Ezacau Village in San José • We envision this as an in-office role, and we are very excited to build a vibrant environment where you can work alongside your colleagues from different teams. • We value flexibility, and will work with you to craft a schedule that meets your needs.
