<p><strong>About the Role</strong></p>
<p>We are looking for a <strong>Mobile Platform Tech Lead </strong>to own and strengthen the technical foundations of our mobile banking app. This is a platform-focused leadership role, not a product feature lead or purely hands-on mobile IC position, with a strong emphasis on platform enablement, developer experience, engineering architecture, release quality, and mobile standards. The role supports a small mobile team of approximately 3 engineers working primarily with React Native across iOS and Android.<br> <br>The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that the mobile platform operates as a reliable, high-quality foundation so that product teams can move faster with confidence. This means understanding the product teams' needs, removing blockers, driving adoption of new tools and processes through mentoring, documentation and training, and setting high engineering standards for the mobile codebase, while carefully managing the trade-off between standards and product team flow.<br> <br>While the role is primarily leadership-focused, it requires sufficient hands-on depth to guide architectural decisions and platform improvements. The team currently has native libraries written in Kotlin, Swift, Objective-C, and Java that require ongoing maintenance and support. There is also a future consideration around a potential move to Expo, which would be explored and decided collaboratively with the new hire.</p>
Responsibilities
β’ Lead, mentor, and provide technical direction to the mobile platform team, with a focus on enabling product teams to operate as efficiently as possible through clear prioritisation of platform initiatives.
β’ Define, implement, and uphold engineering standards across mobile security, observability, performance, resilience, and release quality, continuously balancing standards improvement with minimal impact on product team velocity.
β’
β’ Act as a hands-on technical leader in the development and maintenance of shared mobile platform capabilities within React Native and TypeScript.
β’ Contribute to architectural decisions relating to React Native, native modules, and integrations across Kotlin, Swift, Objective-C, and Java.
β’ Own and drive improvements to CI/CD pipelines, build reliability, release workflows, and deployment processes, a critical and essential responsibility for this role.
β’ Own mobile platform-level observability and crash reporting, including tooling for logging, analytics, exception monitoring, and production stability; general service alerting is managed by product domain teams.
β’ Partner with product feature teams to ensure releases are delivered smoothly, meet quality expectations, and align with regulatory and compliance requirements.
β’ Drive improvements in automated testing practices, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing approaches that improve confidence in release quality.
β’ Own and coordinate production incident management and release activities, ensuring timely resolution, clear communication, and strong operational control.
β’ Collaborate with design and product teams to evolve and maintain shared UI components, platform standards, and mobile design system capabilities.
β’ Drive adoption of new tools, processes, and standards across product teams through mentoring, documentation, and training, ensuring improvements are embedded in practice, not just defined on paper.
β’ Identify and drive opportunities to improve platform stability, developer productivity, and the long-term maintainability of the mobile application estate.
β’ Promote secure application development practices and support compliance-aligned delivery within a regulated banking environment.
β’ Evaluate tooling evolution where relevant, including potential future considerations such as a move to Expo, in close collaboration with the team.
Requirements
β’ 8+ years of experience in mobile engineering, including significant time operating at a Tech Lead, Mobile Platform Lead, Staff, or Principal Engineer level.
β’ 4+ years of production experience building and maintaining mobile applications with React Native and TypeScript, this is the core of the stack.
β’ 4+ years of experience with native mobile development (Kotlin, Swift, Objective-C, or Java), required for maintaining and supporting native libraries already in use.
β’ Own and drive improvements to CI/CD pipelines, build reliability, release processes, deployment workflows, and broader developer workflows, this is an essential requirement for the role.
β’ Strong understanding of mobile architecture, including React Native bridges, native modules, and platform-level architectural decisions.
β’ Experience owning or significantly improving mobile platform observability, crash reporting (e.g. Firebase Crashlytics, Sentry, Datadog), exception monitoring, and production incident handling.
β’ Strong experience with mobile testing approaches, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing (e.g. Detox, Appium, Jest) to drive release confidence.
β’ Solid understanding of mobile engineering standards across performance, resilience, reliability, and quality.
β’ 1+ year of experience leading a mobile platform team, with demonstrated responsibility for technical direction, mentoring, and engineering standards.
β’ Track record of understanding product team needs and prioritising platform work to remove blockers and accelerate product delivery.
β’ Demonstrated ability to drive adoption of new tools and processes across teams, through documentation, training, and hands-on mentoring, not just defining standards.
β’ Experience setting and maintaining a high-quality bar for a mobile codebase while managing the ongoing trade-off between standards and team velocity.
β’ Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across engineering, product, design, and where relevant, compliance and regulatory stakeholders.
β’ Prior experience leading at least one significant technical or platform project end-to-end.
β’ Experience managing or directly leading engineers, with a people-first approach to technical leadership.
Nice to Have
β’ Prior experience in a fintech, banking, or regulated product environment
β’ Stronger depth in native mobile development (Kotlin, Swift, Objective-C, or Java) beyond integration and maintenance support.
β’ Experience evaluating or supporting React Native tooling evolution, including Expo or similar migration considerations.
β’ Exposure to shared platform components, design systems, or reusable mobile UI library development and maintenance.
β’ Experience with secure mobile development practices or a background that includes mobile security-focused work.
β’ Familiarity with mobile performance optimisation, resilience patterns, or broader non-functional quality standards.
