About the Role
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to join Spotify's Platform team, which creates the technology enabling rapid scaling and learning. This role focuses on building and evolving Backstage, the open-source and SaaS platform for developer portals, combining Spotify's leadership in scaling R&D organizations with AI capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- →Set technical and product direction for systems used by engineers across Spotify and external organizations
- →Partner with product, design, data, and research to ship high-quality platform solutions
- →Drive architectural decisions across cloud-native systems, internal developer platforms, and AI-assisted tooling
- →Build and evolve infrastructure supporting plugins, extensibility, and emerging patterns like MCP servers
- →Bring a commercial mindset to technical decisions, weighing open source vs. proprietary tradeoffs
- →Lead and grow engineering teams building Backstage's core platform and SaaS capabilities
- →Act as a trusted partner to senior leadership with clear viewpoints and recommendations
- →Create an environment for engineers to excel through coaching and inclusive practices
Requirements
- ✓Experience building and operating complex, developer-facing products used at scale
- ✓Deep technical credibility from hands-on engineering work across cloud, infrastructure, and platform systems
- ✓Understanding of engineer workflows, difficulties, and jobs to be done
- ✓Strong judgment in system design, tradeoffs, and long-term technical strategy
- ✓Experience with modern AI-assisted development tools and their impact on engineering
- ✓Ability to think in business terms and understand how technical choices affect adoption and cost
- ✓Comfort taking a point of view, explaining reasoning, and constructively complicating decisions
- ✓Enjoy working with distributed teams across functions, time zones, and cultures
