About the Role We are seeking an experienced Kong Developer / API Gateway Engineer to design, develop, and implement secure, scalable, and highly available API Gateway solutions. This role focuses on Kong Enterprise engineering, API security, authentication and authorisation, custom plugin development, cloud-native deployment, and automation. Key Responsibilities • Design, develop, configure, and maintain Kong Enterprise API Gateway solutions in cloud-native environments • Engineer and support Kong API Gateway in hybrid deployment models, including AWS EKS/Kubernetes • Design and implement secure authentication and authorisation patterns for enterprise APIs • Integrate Kong with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, mTLS, Microsoft Entra ID, and Ping Identity • Develop and deploy custom Kong plugins for mTLS termination, API security, and Layer 7 observability • Implement API traffic management, rate limiting, scalability, and resilient gateway configurations • Automate infrastructure and Kong platform configurations using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code • Develop automation and integration components using Lua, Python, Bash, Java, and JavaScript • Integrate API Gateway capabilities with AWS, EKS, and Kubernetes • Implement secure service-to-service communication and certificate-based authentication • Support fine-grained authorisation and policy-based access controls using technologies such as OPA/OPAL • Build and maintain production-grade gateway solutions focused on availability, scalability, security, and observability • Troubleshoot API Gateway issues across development, testing, and production environments • Participate in incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement • Collaborate with application, cloud, security, IAM, and DevOps teams Requirements • Strong hands-on experience with Kong Enterprise / Kong API Gateway • Kong configuration, deployment, and troubleshooting • Kong custom plugin development and Lua programming • RESTful APIs and secure API design • OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and mTLS • Authentication and authorisation patterns • AWS and Kubernetes / AWS EKS • Terraform and Infrastructure as Code • Python and Bash scripting • CI/CD and DevOps practices • API security, reliability, and observability • Strong troubleshooting and production support skills
