English Localization Translator – Functional Text Specialist (Remote/Freelance)

Role Overview We are looking for an experienced English localization translator specializing in functional text for video games. You will deliver clear, consistent, and culturally adapted translations for in-game content such as UI, tutorials, and system messages. Key Responsibilities 1. Core Translation Work (80%) *Translate functional in-game text: UI, system prompts, achievements, tutorials, menus, buttons, and settings (e.g., Graphics Quality, Start Game, Inventory). *Follow glossary and style guides to ensure consistency. *Localize content for North American players, prioritizing clarity and natural language. *Use CAT tools (e.g., Trados, memoQ, XTM) to manage translation memories and term bases. *Research industry-leading games (e.g., League of Legends, WoW, DOTA 2) for terminology reference. *Raise questions on unclear source text or conflicts.

2. Quality Assurance & Collaboration (20%) *Perform self-reviews to eliminate errors and check text length compliance. *Communicate clearly with language/project managers to resolve issues. *Help maintain and improve terminology databases. *Ensure cultural appropriateness and avoid offensive content. *Incorporate feedback professionally.

Required Qualifications *Native-level American English with excellent writing skills. *3–5 years of localization experience, preferably in video games or software UI/functional text. *In-depth gaming experience in at least two titles such as LoL, WoW, DOTA 2, Diablo, or similar. *Familiarity with gaming terms: Crowd Control (CC), Cooldown (CD), Buff, Nerf, Aggro, DPS, Tank, etc. *Advanced Chinese reading ability (HSK6 or equivalent); able to grasp nuanced meanings. *Strong creative adaptation skills beyond literal translation. High attention to detail and consistency. *Good collaboration and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications *Bachelor’s degree or higher in Translation, English, Game Design, or related field. *Experience with CAT tools such as Trados, memoQ, Phrase, or Smartling. *3+ years of living experience in the United States is a plus.
