About the Lead Product Owner role...
The Lead Product Owner is responsible for driving the successful outcomes of product initiatives by line managing and coaching Product Owners, optimising product deliverables and ways of working and streamlining delivery processes across multiple teams within a designated portfolio, also facilitating some deliverables across portfolios. This role works closely with Engineering Managers to ensure the efficient flow of work from ideation to release, focusing on quality product outcomes while Engineering Managers drive the delivery.
What you'll do...
- Manage & Mentor Product Owners: Provide direct line management, coaching, mentoring, performance reviews, and career development for Product Owners, fostering a high-performing and motivated team. Establish clearly defined Product Owner responsibilities and growth opportunities by building on existing capability matrix principles and aligning with Product Leadership.
- Oversee Requirements Quality & Alignment: Oversee product deliverables to ensure business value, problem statements, requirements, delivery artefacts and success metrics are clearly defined, coaching Product Owners where needed to meet defined product outcomes.
- Foster Better Delivery Processes for Quality Outcomes: Ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of products and features from ideation through development to release, focusing on the quality of the deliverables, introducing best-practice ways of working and and working in close partnership with Engineering Managers who drive the on-time execution.
- Facilitate Cross-Team Alignment & Delivery: Align Ways of Working with peers across portfolios, create workflows and implement standards. Identify and manage dependencies across multiple delivery teams and portfolios as required, ensuring clear communication and coordination to unblock progress and maintain flow.
- Contribute to Initiative Planning and Reporting: Establish and track key delivery portfolio delivery metrics (initiative delivery timelines, defect rates) and communicate progress, risks, and forecasts to senior leadership and relevant stakeholders and give visibility on planned vs delivered initiatives on a quarterly basis.
- Contribute to Portfolio Initiative & Roadmap Planning: Work with Product and Engineering leadership to ensure portfolio initiatives are prioritised accordingly and there is appropriate resourcing and capacity planning for delivery teams to meet product roadmap objectives.
- Champion Agile Process Improvement: Continuously assess and improve portfolio and organisation-wide delivery processes, agile practices, and team effectiveness, as well as coaching Product Owners on implementing best practices to enhance predictability, quality, and speed.
- Drive Product Delivery Improvements: Continuously assess and improve portfolio and organisation-wide product delivery practices (e.g. Requirements gathering, documentation, communicating value / problem statements, quantifying impact, consistent use of tooling, coaching Product Owners on best practices to reach the necessary product outcomes and build vision clarity within their teams.
- Lead and contribute to the Product Owner guild: Foster a community of practice that creates a culture of learning and skill uplift by sharing knowledge, experience and best practices in the Product Owner space.
What you'll have...
- Proven Leader: 5+ years of experience in product or Agile delivery roles, with demonstrable experience in line management and team leadership.
- Experienced in Product: Understands core product practices that impact Product Owners such as value-based prioritisation, problem statements, success metrics and insights.
- Delivery Focused: Strong understanding of the end-to-end software development lifecycle and a passion for optimizing delivery flow and efficiency.
- Exceptional Communicator: Clear, concise, and persuasive written and oral communication skills, capable of influencing diverse technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
- Collaborative & Enabling: Highly collaborative work style with a strong background in leading and facilitating cross-functional workshops to drive delivery outcomes.
- Agile Expertise: Deep understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, etc.) and experience coaching teams and individuals in their adoption and continuous improvement.
