Frontend Engineer at Sumup

As a Frontend Engineer in the Design System team, you will translate SumUp’s design language into an easy-to-use, reusable library of user interface components and experience patterns. You will enable SumUp’s product teams to build cohesive and accessible user experiences, directly contributing to strategic company priorities such as our upcoming brand refresh. The Design System team is expanding to cover a growing scope of stakeholders, including merchant and consumer-facing products and internal tools. This role offers a unique opportunity to optimize and expand a system that helps developers build features faster and deliver high-quality experiences to millions of users worldwide. What You'll Do • Shape the core experience of merchants and developers by building maintainable, usable, and beautiful web components. • Contribute to the brand refresh and dark mode rollout across the marketing website, merchant dashboard, support center, and other web applications. • Support the adoption of the design system in internal tools, such as the back office, by building and optimizing components. • Embed accessibility into every component, taking pride in crafting inclusive user experiences. • Collaborate closely with product and design teams, as well as the Web Platform team, to set standards and provide technical support. • Identify and address tech debt proactively to ensure a high bar for engineering excellence and codebase health. What We're Looking For • You have 3+ years of professional frontend development experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript/TypeScript. • You have 2+ years of experience working with React or a similar UI framework. • You strive for clean code and can effectively balance pragmatism with perfection. • You have a strong grasp of testing best practices - knowing what to test, why, and how to write resilient tests. • You are self-motivated, have a clearly structured working style, and possess good verbal and written English communication skills. • You enjoy keeping up to date with advancements in the web ecosystem and are excited about sharing your knowledge. Bonus Points (Nice to Have) • Previous experience building and maintaining Design Systems. • Experience navigating complex codebases and refactoring existing code. • Comfort with public speaking.
