TEGNA,β―the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets,β―is hiring a Data Visualization Specialist that supports the Enterprise data journalism team by turning analysis and reporting into clear, accurate, and engaging visual storytelling.
This role works closely with the Data JournalistβReporter and Data Analyst & Researcher, as well as the Product team, to ensure data findings are understandable, accessible and useful to audiences.
This role plays a critical role in shaping how data-driven stories and tools are experienced across digital, streaming, and broadcast platforms.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Create charts, maps, and graphics that clearly communicate findings from data-driven reporting.
β’ Translate analysis and reporting led by the Data JournalistβProducer into visual form.
β’ Help audiences quickly understand scale, trends, and comparisons through effective visual design.
β’ Produce fast, clean visuals for breaking news and timely explainers.
β’ Contribute visual storytelling to deeper enterprise and investigative projects.
β’ Adapt visuals for use across digital, streaming, and broadcast platforms.
β’ AI-assisted tools to support data visualization and analysis workflows.
β’ Partner with the Product team to develop interactive maps, dashboards, and explainers.
β’ Contribute to repeatable, data-driven tools that can be localized across markets.
β’ Maintain visual consistency across enterprise data products.
β’ Ensure visuals accurately represent underlying data and analysis.
β’ Clearly communicate uncertainty, limitations, or caveats when appropriate.
β’ Apply accessibility and usability best practices
β’ Collaborate with the Data Analyst & Researcher to understand methodology and data constraints.
β’ Work with contributing reporters and local market teams to adapt visuals for their audiences.
β’ Support the broader goals of the Enterprise Content Team through visual expertise.
Qualifications
β’ Demonstrated experience in data visualization, visual journalism, or information design.
β’ Experience producing publication-grade charts and visuals, in Adobe Illustrator, Figma or in the browser preferred.
β’ Experience producing interactive journalism using modern programming frameworks like Svelte preferred.
β’ Experience using AI-assisted tools to support data visualization and analysis workflows.
β’ Proficiency with visualization tools or frameworks such as:
β’ Flourish, Tableau, Carto, or similar tools
β’ GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS, PostGIS)
β’ JavaScript-based libraries (e.g., D3) a plus
β’ Strong design fundamentals and attention to detail.
β’ Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and basic JavaScript.
β’ Ability to work quickly and collaboratively in a lean, enterprise reporting environment.
Pay Range $45β$55 USD
