About the Role
We are seeking a Policy Director to lead the development, prioritization, and execution of the campaign's policy agenda. This role requires equal parts substantive policy expertise and strong management ability to oversee the policy team and ensure campaign alignment.
Key Responsibilities
- →Lead development of the campaign's policy positions, ensuring proposals are clear, credible, and strategically aligned
- →Set policy priorities balancing political realities, public interest, and candidate goals
- →Establish internal processes for policy decision-making, review, approval, and communication
- →Manage and support the policy team including staff and consultants
- →Oversee workload planning, deadlines, project timelines, and quality control for all policy products
- →Build internal systems to keep the team organized, responsive, and aligned with campaign needs
- →Work closely with Communications, Political, Scheduling/Advance, and Digital departments
- →Serve as central point for policy updates, cross-team requests, and messaging alignment
- →Monitor legislative, regulatory, and economic developments across California
- →Provide rapid-response policy support for breaking news, events, and press moments
- →Develop relationships with subject-matter experts, academics, community leaders, and coalition groups
Requirements
- ✓Minimum 8 years experience in public policy, government, legislative affairs, advocacy, or campaigns
- ✓Demonstrated experience managing teams and complex projects with priority-setting and delegation
- ✓Strong organizational skills for fast-paced, evolving environments
- ✓Exceptional research, analytical, and writing ability with high-quality policy work track record
- ✓Deep understanding of California policy landscapes including housing, energy, and affordability
- ✓Ability to navigate politically sensitive issues with judgment, discretion, and strategic insight
- ✓Strong interpersonal and communication skills for cross-department coordination
- ✓Comfort working under tight deadlines and managing multiple simultaneous workstreams
- ✓Strong working knowledge of Google Workspace
- ✓Flexible schedule and willingness to travel in-state
