AI Language Translation: Can AI Replace Human Translators?

17 April 2023

What is AI Translation?

AI translation involves the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms to automatically translate text or speech from one language to another.

The goal of AI translation is to provide an accurate and efficient way to translate content without the need for human intervention. AI translation uses various techniques, including statistical machine translation, neural machine translation, and natural language processing to analyze and translate text. These technologies have significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of translation, making it possible to translate large volumes of content quickly and at a lower cost than traditional translation methods.

How does AI Language Translation Work?

AI language translation involves using algorithms and machine learning techniques to automatically translate text from one language to another. There are three main types of AI language translation: rule-based, statistical, and neural machine translation and each works differently.

1. Rule-based Translation

Also known as knowledge-based translation, rule-based translation involves creating a set of predefined rules and grammar that the computer follows to translate the text. These rules are often created by linguists and language experts, who specify how words and phrases should be translated based on their meaning and contexts. The computer then applies these rules to translate the text. Rule-based translation can produce accurate translations for specific domains, such as legal or medical texts, where precise terminology is crucial. However, it requires a lot of manual input from language experts, and it may not able to handle the complexity and ambiguity of natural language.

2. Statistical Translation

It involves analyzing large amounts of bilingual text data to identify patterns and relationships between words in different languages. The computer uses this data to create statistical models that can predict the most likely translation for a given sentence. This type of translation can handle more complex and nuanced translations than rule-based translation, and it does not require manual input from language experts. However, it may not be as accurate as the rule-based translation for specialized domains.

3. Neural Machine Translation (NMT)

NMT is the latest and most advanced type of AI language translation. It involves using deep neural networks to learn how to translate text from one language to another. The computer is trained on large amounts of bilingual text data, and it learns to generate translations by analyzing the context and meaning of each sentence. NMT can produce more accurate and natural-sounding translations than rule-based or statistical translations. It can also handle more complex and ambiguous sentence structures, and it can adapt to new language pairs with minimal human input. However, NMT requires a large amount of computational power and data to train the neural networks, and it may still make errors and produce inaccurate translations in certain contexts. It may also not be able to capture the cultural nuances and idiomatic expressions that are essential for accurate translation.

In 2016, Google initiated NMT with the Google Translate application. The NMT systems use data to create codes that map almost any words and phrases to the target language to meet the demands of its users.

Neural learning systems are tailored to become more accurate as they execute this task to the extent that they can almost be fluent even in native languages that are not too common. Taking a perspective look at the Google Translate app, it has become more effective over the years, especially when it comes to easy and most-used languages.

Benefits of AI Translation

Speed: AI language translation is much faster than human translation. AI can process large volumes of data quickly, making it ideal for businesses that require translation services for their global operations. Additionally, AI technology can work 24/7, making it possible to get translations done around the clock.

Cost-effective: AI language translation is cost-effective for businesses that require translation services regularly. Unlike human translators, who require a salary and benefits, AI translation software is a one-time investment. This means that businesses can save money in the long run by using AI technology.

Accuracy: One of the biggest benefits of AI language translation is its accuracy. AI translation software uses machine learning algorithms to understand the context of the text being translated, making it more accurate than traditional translation methods. It can also learn from its mistakes, improving its accuracy over time.

Downsides of AI Translation

Cultural Nuances: Despite the pivotal role AI services play, they can still be misleading because human beings interact better among themselves and can better comprehend cultures, religions, traditions, and ways of life better than any AI service. This can lead to translations that are inaccurate or inappropriate.

Contextual Understanding: One of the biggest drawbacks of AI language translation is its lack of contextual understanding. AI translation software may struggle to understand the meaning of a word or phrase in a specific context, which can often lead to inaccuracies in translation.

Natural Language Processing Limitations: Most AI translation software and apps rely on Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand and translate text. However, NLP technology is still in its early stages and has limitations. For example, it may struggle with languages that have complex grammatical rules or syntax.

Can AI Replace Human Translators?

AI plays a pivotal role in assisting humans in varied ways, but it certainly cannot replace human translators. This is because there are still many limitations to AI translation as mentioned earlier. AI translation can complement, and not replace human translators. Where people find difficulty, they can turn to AI for support, especially for complex tasks instead of completely relying on AI services.

Here are some ways AI can complement human translators:

  • AI can serve as a quality control mechanism, which automatically checks human texts for errors.
  • AI can decipher which texts can be completed by machines and the ones to be assigned to humans depending on how hard or easy it is to understand.
  • Human translators can benefit from AI assistance with translation tools to ease their work.
  • Corporate bodies, companies, and institutions can utilize AI to help automate content creation and translation when possible, and at the same time break even with cost and time.

Bottomline

For now, AI is of great help, but cannot replace human translators. Humans, tell stories, crack jokes, know signs and symbols, and understand and interpret wise sayings; all things AI cannot do. Even if artificial intelligence can eventually replace humans, that time is not here yet.
