About the Role
We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Lead Migration Engineer to lead the migration of a large legacy Linux environment from a VMware data center to GCP. The environment includes legacy CentOS/RHEL servers, Perl applications, MySQL databases, shared NetApp NFS storage, and a Strongmail email platform.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead infrastructure discovery, dependency mapping, and documentation of legacy servers, applications, databases, scheduled jobs, and network configurations.
• Develop migration strategies, application groupings, and phased migration plans.
• Plan and execute proof of concepts, pilot migrations, production cutovers, and rollback rehearsals.
• Migrate VMware-based Linux workloads to GCP, containerizing suitable Perl applications and moving remaining workloads as virtual machines.
• Manage MySQL database migration, backup, replication, recovery, and rollback planning.
• Ensure continuity of shared NFS file systems, scheduled jobs, and Strongmail services.
• Develop and own migration runbooks, lead weekend cutovers, and provide post-migration hypercare.
• Coordinate source environment decommissioning and secure data wiping.
• Lead the offshore engineering team and collaborate with client-side DevOps, DBA, security, networking, and cloud architecture teams.
Requirements
• Strong hands-on Linux experience, particularly CentOS, RHEL, and Oracle Linux; working knowledge of FreeBSD.
• VMware vSphere/vCenter, data center migrations, dependency mapping, cutover planning, and rollback procedures.
• Perl 5, CPAN, Apache, Bash, cron, and legacy application troubleshooting.
• MySQL/Percona database administration, replication, backup, and restore.
• NetApp, NFS, shared file systems, and storage migration.
• Docker and working knowledge of Kubernetes.
• Networking fundamentals, DNS, load balancers, firewalls, and IP allowlisting.
• Automation using Ansible, Packer, Git, and GitLab CI/CD.
• Proven technical leadership, documentation, and offshore team management skills.
